Borders books stores won't be selling a magazine this month because they are concerned for the safety of their employees and customers. [pssssst! the magazine has the Danish cartoons of Mohammed inside!] More here, to include some other examples of preemptive appeasment.
Seems to me a percentage of the population is afraid of the Islamic extremists. If I recall correctly, a percentage of the population feels the Bush administration uses the fear of terrorism as a public relations strategy.
I wonder if there's any overlap between the two?
