The anniversary of the September 11th attacks will forever be a somber and solemn occasion. This is probably as close to an anniversary gift as you could get.

In the words of a friend, knowledgable of the factions and personalities within Afghanistan, "Hekmatyar is a dirtbag."

While many will discuss the hope of fracturing Hezb-i-Islami Gulbuddin, the real gift is Hekmatyar's dirtbaggedness. He'll stab one-time allies in the back and switch allegiances as it suits him. It's not a surprise that he surrendered without a fight, and he is probably trying to make the most of his new situation.

If he knows where key al-Qaeda leaders are, or knows the location of someone who does, I'd expect the good news to continue to flow.

Kudos to the men and women who brought this dirtbag in.
