Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has reportedly been captured, according to Bill Roggio. [via Insta-dude]

I'll get back to some photo-blogging in a day or two. In the meantime...

The search for Ralph Phillips continues. Some good news: Trooper Donald Baker, Jr. has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

My website is one year old today.

The only time I get to watch the Mets on TV out here in Alaska is when they play the Braves or the Cubs. They're playing the Braves, which means they're on TBS this afternoon. The TBS crew must have been spoiled by all those years of excellent Atlanta pitching; you could almost feel their distaste for Mets' ace and potential Cy Young candidate, Steve Trachsel.

Trooper Joseph Longobardo died of injuries sustained when he was shot in the leg during a manhunt for Ralph "Bucky" Phillips. More here. Trooper Donald Baker, Jr. remains in critical condition in a medically induced coma. Troopers Longobardo and Baker were keeping an eye on the home of a girlfriend of Phillips.
According to WGRZ, the girlfriend is now back behind bars after her bail was revoked. News reports over the past few months have detailed the "hero" status that Phillips has enjoyed as a fugitive. For a sample, check the comments on this thread.
Blue Crab Boulevard has a good post on the suspected cop killer.
UPDATE: Blue Crab Boulevard was nice enough to link back... thanks!
The New York State Troopers have a page on Phillips, as well as a wanted poster [.pdf file] for folks in western NY or northern Pennsylvania.
Of course, in the United States you are innocent until proven guilty. While America's Most Wanted provides some compelling evidence, Phillips will eventually get his day in court...

Hey Gidge, those bright orange fish are called Sebastes ruberrimus, or Yellow-eye Rockfish. You have to keep every yellow-eye rockfish you catch, since bringing them to the surface kills them. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, certain species of rockfish have a special type of swim bladder with a unique gas-producing and absorbing gland, which allows a fluctuation in the quantity of gas within the swim bladder. This helps the fish maintain boyancy at various depths. When reeled to the surface, the fish is unable to absorb the gas in the swim bladder fast enough; the change in pressure as it nears the surface kills the fish.
Other species, such as dusky and black rockfish don't have this unique gland. They survive the trip to the surface, but ended up on my dinner plate just the same.

"It's not a seagull; it's a kittiwake," the Captain grumbled.
I guess he doesn't like seagulls.

Whittier, Alaska -- home of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, which depending on structural integrity of the Ted, is either the longest or second longest tunnel in the U.S.

To be honest, I don't remember the name of the boat. I've got a business card for the charter company around here somewhere...
