Curtailing freedoms
Posted by JP at 10:35 PM in The Duece | Comments (1)

Reading a story like this:

The French Constitutional Council has approved a law that criminalizes the filming or broadcasting of acts of violence by people other than professional journalists. The law could lead to the imprisonment of eyewitnesses who film acts of police violence, or operators of Web sites publishing the images, one French civil liberties group warned on Tuesday.

Found a new website that cracked me up: A Day in the Life of an Ambulance Driver.

And I'll never link to anything like this. Ever again. Bambi & Thumper.

Sad, but probably true. Personally, I'm rooting for Vinny Testaverde to take a knee on the last play of the Super Bowl. Other than that, I'm in it for the commercials.

Plenty of photos should be posted over the next week or so. For now, here's Rich sizing up the Ruger Super Redhawk.

Did NYC mayor break the law?
Posted by JP at 01:57 AM in The Duece | Comments (1)

kimber_joe.jpg

Via Insta-dude, we learn of this New York Sun article.

The business was one of 15 so-called rogue dealers in five states that Mr. Bloomberg sued two months ago after an undercover sting operation. The 13-page complaint filed yesterday said that Mr. Bloomberg and several others in his administration smeared the dealer's reputation and that its undercover investigators lied on federal Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco forms.

mAssBackwards caught a pair of stories in the Boston media detailing the increasing popularity of recreational shooting and firearms ownership among women.

This is Carol and her husband Ken. They're both IDPA members.

I'm overjoyed to work in a unit where so many people own firearms and shoot regularly.

Two of my buddies
Posted by JP at 06:31 AM in Photography , The Duece , Thoughts | Comments (1)

elliot and rich.jpgA while back Rich [blue jacket] and I headed to the range to knock off a few rounds. Elliot [orange jacket] came with us, and seemed to have a pretty good time. It's always great when a first time shooter has a positive experience at the range.

Our shift schedule is being jockeyed around after next week. We won't be working the same schedule, and won't be working with the same people. It'll be alright; different, but alright.

At first I was a little worried that I wouldn't have folks to shoot with. Rich is currently in an undisclosed location, doing some fancy-schmancy TDY job. I won't be working with Young Daniel anymore, nor with Sergeant Dan. Randy and Dawk have PCS'd to a new base. Geez... who will I go shooting with?

Then I started thinking that perhaps going to the range would be a good way to build up some comraderie with the new crew. Especially now that we're only two months away from reasonable weather. Heck, it might be late enough in the year that it doesn't drop below 0°F again until November.

Besides, all the other guys will head to their new crews and start converting the masses. Eventually, down the road when all the planets align, we'll all have an afternoon off together. Maybe we can get 15-20 folks from the unit out to the gun range the same day?

The Target Tour, at last
Posted by JP at 10:27 PM in The Duece | Comments (3)

targettour1.jpg
I've finally gotten some free time to get some blogging done. First on the agenda is the Second Amendment Bloggers Target Tour. Bullseye [NSFW] in Fort Liquordale, Florida kicked it off, passing the target to Billy Budd in Arizona. It made it's way to Little Rock, Arkansas where Circa Bellum sent it to me here in Anchorage, Alaska. Where does it head to next?

Details in the extended entry.

UPDATE: Bumped to keep thread at the top for a few days.

Blogworthiness
Posted by JP at 01:26 PM in Blogworthy , The Duece | Comments (1)

So the Giants' game is over. Perhaps the Giants should run a hurry up offense, at least for a few drives during the game. Manning has led a game winning or game tying drive in the final minute four of the last six weeks, minus only the blowouts against the 'Skins and the 49'ers. Why not once a quarter just run the no-huddle offense?

The Fire Ant Gazette runs a photo of an oversized rattler. I wonder if the folks who campaign against fur have similar feelings towards turning a nine foot rattler into a wallet. Just curious.

Personally, I'm not afraid of snakes like my buddy Raymond. Then again, I'm in Alaska.

Kevin at Smallest Minority reminds us that National Ammo Day is upon us. If you've got a gun, go out and buy some ammo on November 19th.

Via Cox & Forkum a story of some WWII vets from the USS Melvin trying to get a ship named in honor of their Skipper, retired Adm. Barry Atkins.

Publicola and TFS Magnum discuss recent pirate attacks. Another case of disarming those who abide by the law, thus making them vulnerable to the lawless. Compare and contrast with these two stories from Alphecca. When someone is already in your house [or along your port-side] your options are limited.

I bought a digital camera this weekend; a Canon Digital Rebel XT. It won't completely replace my Reagan-era Minolta X-700, but as I get used to it, I think I'll probably shoot the majority of my photos with it. Might take me a little while to figure it all out.

And I definately won't be taking long exposure photos with it. That's one discipline where the old manual-everything Minolta wins. Not that I've been taking many long exposure photos lately. Tim calls me a whiner. He's right. Then again, my first few months in Arizona and Hawai'i I was complaining about the heat, but eventually got used to it. Give me a few more weeks [or months] and I'm sure I'll be adapted. I am amazed at how many people I see in short-sleeves here in Anchorage as soon as the temperature breaks 25°F. Probably the same people that complain about the heat [70°F] in July.

I think I'm going to take a Russian language class at one of the local colleges. There's a great deal of Russian culture here in Alaska, and most of the local schools have some Russian programs. In the meanwhile, I'm checking out Spoonful of Russian to help me get started.

Target Tour Contest...
Posted by JP at 09:52 AM in The Duece | Comments (1)

As I mentioned here, Anchorage is the current stop on the Second Amendment Target Tour. The idea is to pass the target around all 50 states, giving pro-Second Amendment bloggers a chance to promote their websites. And we get to have a little fun along the way.

Now it's my turn to figure out a way to select a blogger to pass the target on to. I'm hoping that a photo contest won't turn out to be too ambitious. Nothing fancy, just a gun-related photo taken by the blogger. It could be artsy-fartsy, or a simple digi-cam snapshot of you and your favorite firearm. Give me a few more days to figure out the fine print. For example, should the photos be posted at each blogger's site, and I'll post links? Should the bloggers e-mail me the photos and I'll post them? Hmmmmm... I'll have to dwell on that a bit.

The contest, once it's up and running, will be open to any pro-Second Amendment blogger who lives anywhere in the US except Florida, Arizona, Arkansas, and Alaska.

I've got two more midnight shifts left until I join the real world again. I'm off all weekend, so I'll probably kick off the contest by Monday.

Second Amendment Target Tour
Posted by JP at 07:24 AM in The Duece | Comments (1)

There's a silhoutte target that is circulating amongst the Second Amendment bloggers. Bullseye [NSFW] in Fort Liquordale, Florida kicked it off, passing the target to Billy Budd in Arizona. It made it's way to Little Rock, Arkansas where Circa Bellum sent it to me here in Anchorage, Alaska. It's traveled roughly 6,000 miles [as the JHP flies] so far.

This weekend I'll be brainstorming to figure out a way of picking a new Second Amendment blogger to send it to. I'm thinking perhaps a photo contest, but I'm open to suggestions. The goal is to have it autographed by bloggers from all 50 states.

And now, after a long 12 hour midnight shift, it's time for me to get some zzz's.

Off to the range
Posted by JP at 10:14 AM in The Duece | Comments (1)

spent casings1.jpgGood news, folks! I've got a three day weekend, and I'm starting it off right -- at the range! I'll be getting together with a few guys from work and sending a small portion of yesterday's paycheck downrange at roughly the speed of sound.*

For those who are not able to enjoy a few hours exercising your Second Amendment rights today, here's some websites to peruse.

Alphecca [who was kind enough to add me to his blogroll] highlights the courageous statements by the Mayor of Montgomery, Alabama. People like Michael Moore will always whine and complain about the culture of guns in America. Where was Michael Moore in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? Did he provide the unarmed citizens of the devasated areas with security? Via John Lott I found this piece in the San Fran Chronicle, rich with links that describe the fates of those who armed themselves, and those who didn't. I don't listen to the emotional appeals of those who fear guns, and I know that the gun control lobby will not be there to save me.

Bruce from mASS BACKWARDS focuses on a story where a homeowner fought back against an illiterate criminal. You'll have to read the link to see why I'm assuming the guy could not read. At a minimum, he misunderstood what the homeowner meant by "gun control." Keep an eye on Bruce's site; it's one of my favorites. After reading a few of the "Massachusetts Gun Control Success Stories" you will understand why he labels this incident a "happy ending." You'll also note the episode took place in gun friendly New Hampshire, rather than Massachusetts.

Finally, stop by and gawk at the September Playmate of the Month Triplets at American Dinosaur.
