Four Chaplains
Posted by JP at 07:28 AM in Thoughts | Comments (1)

Sure, it's Super Bowl Sunday. Words like hero and courage and sacrifice will be thrown around.

3 February 1943:

When giving their life jackets, Rabbi Goode did not call out for a Jew; Father Washington did not call out for a Catholic; nor did the Reverends Fox and Poling call out for a Protestant. They simply gave their life jackets to the next man in line. (source)

Keep it all in perspective.

Blackwater and Flying Tigers
Posted by JP at 11:04 AM in Thoughts | Comments (4)

How is Blackwater, USA any different from the American Volunteer Group that worked to maintain open supply lines along the Burma Road in the early days of WWII?

I mean, other than the fact that Walt Disney (see photo) didn't design Blackwater's logo, and the head of Blackwater hasn't been praised by Dr. Seuss.

BLEVE
Posted by JP at 01:34 PM in Thoughts | Comments (0)

There's a great deal of talk about attempted fuel air explosions in the UK this past week.

I wonder if the Jihad All-Stars were attempting to create a BLEVE -- "boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion." If true, our British cousins are very fortunate that the bombs fizzled.

As I understand it, when you have propane in liquid form in a tank, with a flame impinging on it, the liquid begins to boil. The expanding vapor causes the tank to rupture, releasing the propane. The rupture itself is violent, and it's followed by a fireball when the propane gas ignites.

I'm surprised I haven't seen the term BLEVE tossed around this weekend.

Something goes beep in the night...
Posted by JP at 02:34 AM in Thoughts | Comments (0)

If you're smoke detector is hardwired to the 120v power and it keeps beeping after you put a fresh battery in it, here's what you do.

1. Disconnect the battery and the 120v power.
2. Hold down the test button for 20 seconds.
3. Reconnect the battery and AC power, and re-install it.

That will drain the juice left in the detector, and cause it to "reboot" like a computer.

It won't stop the beeping though.

I bought a few movies off the net a week or two ago. First up, The Devil & Daniel Webster (1941). Now I know for every great movie from that era, there was probably a thousand crappy ones. Trooper Donald Baker, Jr. remains in critical condition in a medically induced coma. Troopers Longobardo and Baker were keeping an eye on the home of a girlfriend of Phillips.

According to WGRZ, the girlfriend is now back behind bars after her bail was revoked. News reports over the past few months have detailed the "hero" status that Phillips has enjoyed as a fugitive. For a sample, check the comments on this thread.

Blue Crab Boulevard has a good post on the suspected cop killer.
UPDATE: Blue Crab Boulevard was nice enough to link back... thanks!

Two of my buddies
Posted by JP at 06:31 AM in Photography , The Duece , Thoughts | Comments (1)

elliot and rich.jpgA while back Rich [blue jacket] and I headed to the range to knock off a few rounds. Elliot [orange jacket] came with us, and seemed to have a pretty good time. It's always great when a first time shooter has a positive experience at the range.

Our shift schedule is being jockeyed around after next week. We won't be working the same schedule, and won't be working with the same people. It'll be alright; different, but alright.

At first I was a little worried that I wouldn't have folks to shoot with. Rich is currently in an undisclosed location, doing some fancy-schmancy TDY job. I won't be working with Young Daniel anymore, nor with Sergeant Dan. Randy and Dawk have PCS'd to a new base. Geez... who will I go shooting with?

Then I started thinking that perhaps going to the range would be a good way to build up some comraderie with the new crew. Especially now that we're only two months away from reasonable weather. Heck, it might be late enough in the year that it doesn't drop below 0°F again until November.

Besides, all the other guys will head to their new crews and start converting the masses. Eventually, down the road when all the planets align, we'll all have an afternoon off together. Maybe we can get 15-20 folks from the unit out to the gun range the same day?

Deception
Posted by JP at 08:34 AM in Thoughts | Comments (0)

It's hard to believe the media's reaction to the idea of US propaganda during wartime. How on earth could Operation: BODYGUARD have succeeded if the press in 1944 acted as they do today? Someone in Washington should grab a couple of dozen journalists and ship them off to the Army War College for two week course in the history of the media's willing role in military Information Operations. Perhaps when those journalists see how their predecessors acted -- faking wedding announcements of non-existant soldiers; printing phony letters to the editor complaining of rowdy service members who didn't exist; even broadcasting secret messages to the French Resistance, signaling to them to begin their acts of sabotage on the eve of the D-day invasion -- perhaps it would be a wake up call.

techselect.jpgI sewed on a new stripe today. It's now Technical Sergeant JP. That's E-6 for those unfamiliar with Air Force rank.

This photo was taken by my buddy Brandon yesterday at the Commander's Call.

As I was getting my uniform ready yesterday, I found my ribbons from my first assignment. I also flipped through some old photos of Airman 1st Class JP, with a full head of hair. Now it's Technical Sergeant JP, sans hair.

I take a look around me at work; at the Airmen, and at the tasks they're given each night. I listen to grumbles about taking out the trash, or having to schedule an appointment during their day off. I watch them study for their Career Development Course tests, and the various position certifications.

Then I think back to Airman 1st Class JP's first assignment, around 10 years ago.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

My heroes
Posted by JP at 12:58 PM in Thoughts | Comments (2)

On this Veteran's Day, a simple post to recognize some of my heroes: the chuckleheads on Charlie Flight. Most are between 19 and 22 years old, and the level of responsibility placed upon them far exceeds anything their peers from high school are doing right now.

Some will undoubtably leave the Air Force after one enlistment, while others will stick around a while. Regardless of whatever career paths they choose, the boundless potential that I am surrounded by each time I step into the aisle at work is my primary source of motivation.

Even when I'm completely stressed out, I am still amazed at how much fun they seem to have while getting as much work done as they do. It's an honor to serve with them.

And of course, there's the two chuckleheads currently deployed. I look forward to their safe return.

And last, but certainly not least, my undying gratitude to men like Andy, Milt, my uncle Pete, and the others who served the past. Without their sacrifice, who knows if the Kommissar would approve of this blog.

Canadians
Posted by JP at 01:02 PM in Thoughts | Comments (0)

Grandpa Hasson.jpgI didn't take this photo. I know it's probably obvious, but I decided when I started the blog that I'd try to stick to posting only my own photography. I'll make an exception for Thomas Hasson, appearing to the right.

He's my great-grandfather. He spent most of his life living in what is now Canadian Forces Base Gagetown.

Although sometimes I wonder about those distant relatives to the North, I'm proud to be of Canadian heritage. I was even prouder back in August, when I learned the story of "Smoky" Smith, a Canadian World War II veteran.

It turns out that a distant cousin of mine [another decendant of Thomas Hasson] was good friends with Smoky, and had traveled to Europe with him a few times -- "...he was a character and he really did love that Scotch."

And while Canada might be the Great White North, Alaska is giving me a crash course on the meaning of the word winter. It might only be the first week of November, but it's down below zero at night here in Anchorage. I don't know how low the temperature gauge in my car will go; I do know that it'll make it down to at least -6°F. That's what it read at 0630 this morning.

Tonight's forecast calls for lows of -10°F [that's -23°C for those rioting en France]. That's just plain cold.

The part of the job that I hate
Posted by JP at 09:12 AM in Thoughts | Comments (2)

I've had a rough time transitioning from a worker who works to a supervisor who supervises. There are parts of it that I can do fine; I can usually keep people pretty busy, even when it's slow. I can answer most job related questions that folks ask, or I'll know who to turn to if I don't know.

Unfortunately when it's busy, or when an exceptionally difficult task [for a young airman] comes up that an old fart like myself could handle easily, I want to roll up my sleeves and join the fun. Grrrrrr! I need one of those electric dog collars that shocks me when I get try jump in and accomplish something that I should be tasking a young airman to fail miserably at. And by failing miserably, I mean in the crawl-walk-run sense. After all, some old sarge at my first assignment tossed me into the fire, allowing me to screw something up royally for the first few times, until finally after much perserverance I had the necessary skills and knowledge to git 'r done.

But that isn't the part of the job that I hate. Freaking paperwork. If I could clear cut the Amazon rainforests solely for the purpose of denying the U.S. Air Force the necessary raw materials they need to produce the endless forms I must continuously fill out, I'd invent some fuel efficient hybrid-electric bulldozer. Hey, if I'm gonna wipe out a gazillion species of life, I might as well make a minor concession to the hippie-types, right? Eh, maybe not. Make it a diesel.

The part of being a Sergeant that I do like is quarterbacking a crisis. When something big is happening, I enjoy the atmosphere and the sense of urgency. I love seeing training and mentoring pay off; a skill that an airman has developed playing a critical role in accomplishing the mission.

Unfortunately, getting to that point requires 1.3 acres of dead trees to document training and perform feedback sessions, not to mention the write-up to make sure the leadership acknowledges the airman's performance.

Maybe that's why I tend to give them time off from work.

Where's so-and-so?
He [or she] is off today.
Why?
Because he [or she] busted his [or her] butt for the past four weeks.

No paperwork required.

I just don't understand
Posted by JP at 08:05 AM in Thoughts | Comments (0)

They say that hindsight is 20/20, but looking back I can't find any clues that I missed. We hadn't seen each other in weeks, so there is much that I might not have known about.

Sometimes you think you know someone: what they are capable of, what type of person they are, what they are made of. Then comes the shocker -- they've done the unthinkable. Maybe alcohol played a role, I don't know. Drugs? It crossed my mind, but I doubt it. There's just so much I don't know; so much, that I really don't know anything. I put puzzles together for a living, sorting through clues and details trying to gain insight into what is happing thousands of miles away. If I were an investigator on some TV drama, I could figure it all out. How did this happen?

After a short time, the denial and disbelief sets in. Maybe it's not true. The cold, hard reality is slow to decend, but you eventually realize that someone you cared about is gone.

I know my friend will never read this post, never know the hurt they caused.

"Each of us answered the call to serve for different reasons. Many of us who choose to stay in the military do so for one reason -- the people."

-- Lt. Col. Paul Wade

Those are the words [as closely as I could remember them] of my commander at the memorial service for my friend and fellow NCO on Friday. I've belonged to many organizations over the years, from volunteer fire departments to churches to Boy Scout troops to high school sports teams. You bond with individuals in any group you belong to, but the closest bonds by far have been with those I've worked with in the Air Force. I'm devastated right now.

My buddy died from a gun shot wound, apparently self-inflicted. Without knowing what the investigators know, it's hard to image that he took his own life just a few hours after our last shift together. However, I understand that with any suicide comes the inevitable bouts of disbelief and denial. I don't know what happened the other night, and it's possible I never will.

Right now, it just kind of hurts.

Bad News
Posted by JP at 06:25 PM in Thoughts | Comments (1)

I found out this morning that a friend from work died. I don't have many details, and I'll refrain from commenting on anything until the investigators have done their thing, relatives have been notified, etc...

I'm very sad. I enjoyed working with him. He had me doubled over laughing several times yesterday at work. He and his fiancee were married less than two weeks ago.

If it turns out he was murdered, I hope justice is swift.

Trooper Joe
Posted by JP at 06:47 AM in Thoughts | Comments (2)

My brother Joe is in town this weekend. He had nothing positive to say about the Northwest Airlines flight that arrived last night.

We'll be hitting the shooting range later today. He brought his Kimber .45 ACP along with him. Hopefully we'll be joined by some guys from work.

Tomorrow we'll probably find some place to watch some football.

Monday thru Wednesday we'll do some sightseeing, weather permitting. There's a little bit of the white stuff in the forecast.

Pork Busters
Posted by JP at 08:45 PM in Thoughts | Comments (3)

porkbusterssm.jpgI saw the Insta-dude's post about N.Z. Bear's PorkBuster page. I took a look at the finalized version of H.R. 3. I found it was easiest to click on the printer friendly version in the top left-hand corner. Then I searched within the page for all the instances of "AK" -- a case sensitive search will save you time when searching for your state.

For the Knik Arm Bridge, I've found five entries, which total $231,425,000.

Now, I've only lived in Anchorage for a little over six months, and I'm not very knowledgable about the debate surrounding the proposed Knik Arm crossing. The Anchorage Daily News [free registration required] has a page with their coverage of the debate.

In light of the anticipated cost of rebuilding the areas devastated by hurricane Katrina, I believe every state and local project that receives federal funding should come under some scrutiny. Despite what some Congressional-types might say, there is pork to be found. Unnecessary projects should be slashed, period. Beyond the ridiculous and unnecessary budget items, some projects will merit federal funding. Even those initiatives should garner a second look. Can the funding be suspended for a period? Would it be reasonable to re-allocate that chunk of federal tax dollars towards southern Louisiana? Hey Congressman [or Congresswoman], that empty stretch of real estate you've been wanting to turn into a highway off-ramp will still be there next year. The Port of New Orleans might not be.

I like the Insta-dudes idea of offering the delegates an opportunity to pick their own pork. Don't wanna give up your pet project? Fine. What will you give up, Congressman [or Congresswoman]?

Letter to the ADN
Posted by JP at 10:41 AM in Thoughts | Comments (0)

My e-mail to the editor of the Anchorage Daily News:

Perhaps in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, Alaska can step up and offer to suspend the Gravina Access Project and other federally funded plans. Regardless of one's views on the projects, the money ear-marked for such endeavors could be re-allocated towards a more pressing need: rebuilding the areas of southern Louisiana devastated by the recent hurricane. By delaying or eliminating one or more federally funded projects Congress can avoid adding to the ever increasing deficit, ensure support for vital programs and services, and keep from raising taxes.

Such an approach could be embraced by those both in support and opposition to such projects.

It also helps to keep in mind that next large scale natural disaster in the U.S. might be an earthquake, tsunami, or volcanic eruption right here at home.

Bridge(s) to Nowhere
Posted by JP at 09:53 AM in Thoughts | Comments (4)

Glenn Reynolds, the Insta-dude, posted an e-mail from one of his readers; read it for yourselves. In summary, Mr. Butler brings up the possibility of bloggers from each state putting pressure on their Congressional delegations to suspend federal funding for some local projects. This money can then be reallocated to help rebuild the areas devastated by hurricane Katrina. As an example, he lists bloggers in Alaska and the federal funding of the "Bridge to Nowhere."

I think the idea of suspending the federal funding of local projects is a sensible idea in the aftermath of Katrina. I'm sure some projects are reasonable, while others are mere pork; but even federal funding for a sensible project can be put off in light of the anticipated cost of bring New Orleans back to life.

Likewise, the suggestion that blogs could influence the decision makers [or influence those who influence the decision makers] is also on target, and for more than one reason. Collectively, weblogs do have the ability to inform, fact-check, refine arguments, and to persuade. This plan presents another benefit: different factions within the blogosphere could have a common objective. Liberal-leaning bloggers who would normally advocate increased federal funding for social programs might be on board with moving some money away from such programs -- temporarily -- in order to meet more pressing needs in Louisiana. I'm sure they would also want to protect certain services, and would sacrifice unnecessary and costly pork to ensure social programs stay funded. Bloggers to the right of center who naturally lean towards reduced federal spending could push for delaying or denying the funding of projects that threaten to ballon the ever-increasing deficit. Reducing the overall size and scope of the federal government would also be a motivation for conservative bloggers. Even non-partisan and single issue advocacy blogs could get involved. Want to ensure your program stays funded? Time to get on the bandwagon and strip the funding from obviously unnecessary pork projects in your state.

The goal would be the same for all groups: help [or force] Congress to re-assess spending priorities in light of the massive rebuilding necessary in southern Louisiana.

One more thing: which "Bridge to Nowhere" are we discussing? The Copper River Bridge? The Knik Arm crossing? The Gravina Access Project?

Alaska even has the "Last Train to Nowhere" -- a not-so-shrewd transportation initiative from the last century.

In fairness, I'm not sure if any federal money was spent on the repairs to the Copper River Bridge. And while I don't buy the rationale behind the Gravina Access Project, there are arguments for and against the Knik Arm crossing that seem reasonable at first glance. Having recently moved to Anchorage from Maryland, I haven't heard enough of the debate to form an opinion yet.

I do believe that in the wake of Katrina that Congress must re-prioritize, and no state or local project that receives federal funding should be exempted from the scrutiny. Let's hope the blogosphrere can have a positive impact.

Update: Saturday, 1:30pm ADT
Welcome Instapundit readers. I've been blogging for about 12 days now. I had 196 hits as of last night, in the ballpark of 500 today thanks to the Instalanche.

Update: Sunday morning
A little over 1,100 hits yesterday. Mister Snitch has some thoughts on the subject, too. 15 minutes, now back to obscurity. Heh, as they say.

Update: Sunday 2:15pm ADT
Some more folks are looking to differ federal funding ear-marked for their states, to help pay for the rebuilding of southern Louisiana. Jay Tea at Wizbang leads the charge. Impossible Scissors talks about suspending our race back to the moon. Stupid and Wrong wants to know who's calling to see those bridges and highways to nowhere scrapped. The Conjecturer believes that Rep. Tom "ongoing vicory" Delay has no shame. Elephant in Exile thinks the President should have called out some Congressmen and Congresswomen by name, specifically Rep. Don Young from here in Alaska. Division of Labour details some good things happening in Bozeman, Montana. And of course the Insta-dude has a great round-up of other blogs looking to cut the fat in the wake of Katrina, and some sound advice for Monday morning.

Happy Birthday, Dad
Posted by JP at 03:06 AM in Thoughts | Comments (4)

On this date in history, during the second term of President Teddy Franklin Roosevelt, my dad was born. As I get older and wiser [read: less unwise] I realize how much I've learned from my old man. Some of it is just common sense -- if I put a jacket on, I won't have to listen to my mom telling me to put a jacket on. Perhaps I would have eventually figured that one out myself.
